Harry Potter and DRM

I finally got to see the concluding film of the Harry Potter series last week - very well done. I was particularly pleased with the storytelling, even if it departed from the text - that was a hard story to tell visually and they did a great job of it. On a related note, this October will see the release of a new web presence for the potter books. What is most exciting though is that they ebooks will be released DRM-free. That means I can read them on any device I choose (Apple, Amazon, or Android, etc.) without having to go through the labor of stripping out the DRM before I can move the files around. This is the way it should be!

I have already secured my spot as being one of the million people that will get beta access before October’s release, thanks to the quill finding expedition on the site. I’m really quite excited for it.

On a side note, any luck on finding anything that can successfully ditch DRM on iBooks? The only thing I have really come across was a plugin for Calibre, but the file hosting site seems to have taken the download away.

The DRM free release is awesome but the best part I think is the mental image of you as such a huge Harry Potter fan that you need to carry all of the books around on your iPad. Now I will know what you are doing when faculty meetings get boring.

Hehe - Yes, these will make for quality reading during faulty meetings!

But Aaron, Calibre was what I used in the past to break DRM for iBooks. If its down, it was probably pulled and I’m not sure what I’d use now. I’ve actually started getting most things in PDF form for this very reason, although I also have a lot of EPUB and .mobi content. UUgh. I hope I don’t need to deal with it anytime soon. Its been working well for me now but it means I have three different readers on my iPad. That seems unnecessary…
