Why I hate Facebook…Today

Everyone knows about everyone’s love/hate relationship with Facebook. But here’s evidence of my most recent frustration:

They’ve abandoned the post button. This really speeds things up, since now you just need to hit enter to post your statement. Whew! It’s a good thing no-one actually ever uses enter for anything important…like, say, a line break or new paragraph? I suppose this is a lame attempt to be more like Twitter?

Interface Fail.

Addendum: I have been taken to school. Apparently a paragraph break can be accomplished via the Shift + Enter combo. Did I miss a visual cue or something? Well, at least its the same approach that every other software interface uses…Oh wait. It’s not.

I’m doing a 46 day abstinence program from facebook.  (I can’t say it’s a lenten fast, but the calendar is the same).  I log in only to clean up anything on my page…which hasn’t been much.  I’m finding that I miss it very little.

Hehe - just a calendar coincidence eh? I found that I also didn’t miss much during my lengthy time away. In fact, I’m basically just using it as a way to broadcast my blog messages! Early during my abstinence, I felt a bit guilty that I wasn’t contributing to others. But I got over that when I realized that no-one was likely reading it anyway. Perhaps my time off Facebook made me more of a cynic?

I figure a true fast would have me refocusing on the spiritual when I think about what I’m abstaining from.  That’s not the case….so I gave it up for lent, but I don’t consider it a fast.

I’m realizing that I miss contact with some folks, but the cost in what I have come to call “noise” makes the return minimal.  Noise is synonymous with ads, farmville spam posts, and a large portion of whining from “friends”...which I suppose it what I’m doing now…lol.

Those of us who are attuned to the keyboard are loving this change. Shift + Enter = New line. But I won’t argue that it should have been made an option instead of just changing it on everybody. Although, I’m not sure I would have ever found it if they hadn’t just made the change.

Shift + enter Fee! I like it! The post button always froze :-p

@Rus: haha - you’ve busted yourself!

@Proponents for Shift + Enter: Its still lame, although I acknowledge how it would make keyboard-centric users happy. I think though that good interface design is actually open to a majority of users, and I’m betting a majority are mousers. My primary frustration is that I shouldn’t have to look something up to do something as simple as post a comment. I do admit that the post button always froze, but that was poor code implementation on the part of FB and the browser makers. Actually, that was going to be my “why I hate Facebook—-tomorrow” post. Now I’ll have to find something new!

I’m currently imagining all of those 50-80 year olds who have been talked into joining Facebook deali with shift + enter.  The change is cruel.  wink

lol - me too. Although I wonder if younger people don’t feel the frustration too and are more accepting of it. I’ve been practicing to be a grumpy old man for decades, maybe its time to realize the reality.

I have to say I like just hitting enter to post. But I rarely write more than a paragraph, so it just makes my posts easier for me.

I agree with the person who said the post button always locked up and that was more frustrating.

Though, I agree with your frustration that they just changed it without announcement or choice. If not for you, I’d have no idea how to make a new paragraph on Facebook.

I also agree with the person who admitted they’d never have found the option if they just made it a silent option to just hit enter to post.
